Ojców National Park
Nature and Legends
Just 25 km north of Kraków lies Ojców National Park, Poland’s smallest national park but one of the most picturesque. Shaped by limestone cliffs, deep valleys, caves, and legends, it’s a favorite destination for hiking, cycling, and day trips into nature.
Highlights you shouldn’t miss:
Ojców Village & Ruins of Ojców Castle
At the heart of the park stands the medieval ruin of Ojców Castle, once part of the defensive “Eagle Nests” system. The nearby village offers restaurants, small museums, and traditional smoked trout – a local specialty.
Łokietek’s Cave
The park’s most famous cave, linked to the legend of King Władysław Łokietek, who is said to have hidden here from his enemies. Visitors can explore its chambers filled with fascinating rock formations.
Ciemna Cave (Dark Cave)
One of the largest caves in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, known for archaeological finds dating back to prehistoric times. A torch-lit visit creates a unique atmosphere.
Chapel on the Water
A charming wooden chapel built over a stream, said to have been constructed “on the water” to avoid Tsarist bans on building churches on land.
Rock Formations
The park is famous for its dramatic limestone rocks. Among the most striking are the Hercules’ Club (a tall, isolated rock column) and the Cracow Gate, a natural stone gateway that once served as a passage into the valley.
Prądnik Valley
The main valley of the park, perfect for hiking or cycling. Its picturesque cliffs, lush greenery, and scattered rock formations make it one of the most beautiful landscapes near Kraków.
Small in size but full of natural wonders, Ojców National Park is a perfect escape into nature and history, all within easy reach of the city.
