Christian Kazimierz
Hidden Treasures
While Kazimierz is best known for its Jewish heritage, the district also has a rich Christian past. In fact, it was originally founded as a separate city in the 14th century by King Casimir the Great. Beautiful Gothic and Baroque churches, quiet squares, and old monasteries still remind us of its Christian roots.
Highlights to Explore:
Corpus Christi Basilica
(Bazylika Bożego Ciała)
A stunning Gothic church founded by King Casimir the Great. Its richly decorated Baroque interior, with a golden altar and magnificent organs, makes it one of the most impressive churches in Kraków.
Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria
A grand Gothic church built by the Augustinians. Known for its tall, elegant structure and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to step away from the crowds.
Church of St. Stanislaus “on the Rock” (Na Skałce)
A historic monastery complex linked to Poland’s patron saint, St. Stanislaus. The crypt here holds the tombs of many famous Polish artists and writers, making it both a sacred and cultural site.
Wolnica Square
(Plac Wolnica)
Once the main market square of Kazimierz when it was an independent town. Today you’ll find the former Town Hall (now the Ethnographic Museum) and a quiet local atmosphere, just a short walk from the riverside.
Monasteries
and Hidden Corners
Kazimierz is dotted with old convents and monasteries, some still active today. Wandering its narrow streets, you’ll discover hidden courtyards, small chapels, and charming architecture that tell stories from centuries past.
The Christian part of Kazimierz offers a different rhythm – less crowded than the Jewish Quarter but full of beautiful landmarks and a sense of timeless history. It’s a great spot to explore if you love churches, architecture, and quiet walks with a touch of old-world charm.
